Micheal card Amy Grant and Rich Mullins . Wilma Rabidoux Hudsonville, Michigan I’m 86 and music is still my passion (jam). Take heart your never to old to ROCK
I’m a 76-year-old exvangelical with a DMA in church music. Amy Grant, Michael W Smith, Keith Green, and Rich Mullins were my young family’s favorite artists in the late ‘70s-mid ‘80s. And…I devoured Jesus and John Wayne; my family and former Christian friends think of me as a heretic; I am still hopeful the church will get its s#t together; and there’s a special place in my heart for immigrants and underserved.
The Normals: turns out you were unknowingly deconstructing the entire time. Now you’re tired, read poetry, help where you can, and listen to more Radiohead than you care to admit too
well, people who catch Normals deep cuts and struggle with performative rule-following anxiety mixed with chronic name misspellings (Rueben, Ruban, Rubin??) are my people. solidarity, sister. ✊🏼
Well the U2 one is pretty spot on. Still a huge fan (saw them at Sphere last October) and although we haven’t divested from arms manufacturers (lol) I do quote Bono 3-4 times a year in a sermon.
And as a Steve Taylor fan, I’m glad to still have my soul as well.
My only complaint about this list was the lack of inclusion of Christian hip hop as that was the majority of my CCM consumption back in the day. 😁
This list was a fun read last week and made even more fun by the comments.
Actually the 90s were when I moved away from CCM because, after having been a music major in some form for most of a decade, I discovered that I actually liked classical music.
I was thinking this too. Daniel Amos is too funny for insurrection nonsense: Vox Humana, "Home Permanent: Their hair points to the sky, the place they'd rather be!" LOL!!! Oh, and spot on re: Steve Camp. He went Trumpy.
Absolutely! I was wondering if there weren't other DA fans out there. I still listen to it today, although I haven't participated in church in many years. Hollow men is my theme song. Mall All Over the World! So much literary goodness.
As a Daniel Amos/Terry Scott Taylor fan, I think he got it wrong. There's no way they would have been w/ the crazies on January 6th. But really enjoyed the list and going back in the way-back machine! And where was Larry Norman!
Appreciate you pointing this out. I addressed this above but will copy it here:
The backstory is that the first person who introduced me to Daniel Amos is now a huge election denier and 1/6 supporter, which is why this came to mind. But as a Lost Dogs STAN, this isn’t fair to Terry Scott Taylor, or to DA. I remember laying on the grass at Cornerstone’s main stage listening to The Lost Dogs sing “Breathe Deep,” and it really helped me embrace a much wider, inclusive view of Christianity, and I wish I would’ve reflected that in this list. This one was definitely a swing and miss.
More 70's/80's CCM: Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Keith Green, Second Chapter of Acts were my high school and early college jams. Moved on to Michael Card, Amy Grant, Bob Bennett, Michael Kelly Blanchard.
Was also really into Steve Camp for a time. A while ago, I was spending some free time looking up my old favs and looked into what he was doing. Surprised myself by crying...
Margaret Becker: the best moment of your day is either at 6 am or 7 pm when you are looking out your window at $local_scenery with a cup of tea. It’s also the only moment of solitude you’re getting today.
Rebecca St James: Your therapist has heard all about purity culture
You were married and divorced by age 25 OR still single (not by choice) at age 40.
OMG, that Michael W Smith one hit close to home.
Okay, that was scary. BUT...thoughts on the GOAT, Larry Norman??
I am a collector. 😎😎😎
Like over 40 albums collected. 🙈🙈

You are encouraging!
Thank you Thomas
This is GREAT! Phil is right on about me😆

Thank you for sharing this, Kristin 🙏🤗

The Normals listeners were definitely deconstructing all along and just doing the best we could. *Cue harmonica*
*gasp* Are you the eponymous Hillary?!? 😉
Lol, nah, non-smoker church kid with anxiety, the only thing the song Hillary and I had in common was the double-l spelling.

Amy Grant, Larnelle Harris, Andre Crouch, Chris Christian (anyone remember him?).
🙋🏻♂️
Bryan Duncan: your voice doesn't work anymore from trying to sing along to his recordings...
Actually the 90s were when I moved away from CCM because, after having been a music major in some form for most of a decade, I discovered that I actually liked classical music.
Au contraire, singing his songs has expanded my range (also he’s my favorite)
“You’re in jail for the January 6 insurrection.” You missed the mark here: THIS IS STEVE CAMP, absolutely not Daniel Amos.
I was thinking this too. Daniel Amos is too funny for insurrection nonsense: Vox Humana, "Home Permanent: Their hair points to the sky, the place they'd rather be!" LOL!!! Oh, and spot on re: Steve Camp. He went Trumpy.

I’m bilingual thanks to Amy Grant’s El Shaddai 😂
I’m a bit younger than some of these and was raised on some of the groups listed along with:
ZOE Girl
Plus One
LaRue
Zoe Girl
Barlow Girl
SuperChic(k)
FFH- Far From Home
Zoe Girl- You think people deconstructing are just trying to sin.

The Lost Dogs were the best! And "Breathe Deep" is one of my favorite songs from back in the day. And like you, it helped me to get over myself...

I’m surprised Margaret Becker isn’t on here. Her Immigrant’s Daughter album is one of my all-time favorites.
