I attended a Gothard seminar back in the late seventies. I was already pretty disenchanted with fundamentalism by then, due to a very bad experience as a faculty member at a Bible college. Nevertheless I attended the seminar hoping to get something useful from it. There was some good information presented that was beneficial in my opinion. The useful information was outweighed, however, by the prooftexting. Scripture was quoted without reference to its historical cultural or social context. When scripture is used this way, you can make it say anything. In Gothard’s case, it was used to demean women and shoehorn everyone into adopting performative roles that inhibit personal growth and development. Then there was the child abuse…..I rejected most of that, and my children are doing way way better than I ever imagined they could.

Thank you again for putting your expertise, your heart, and your time into these documentaries. Insiders need to be heard and validated. Outsiders, like me, need to learn, get activated, and become allies for survivors and supportive warriors for the battle for accountability and healing.

Powerful redemptive challenging final episode of Shiny Happy People. Words of male survivor “so all we have to do is talk” are true. Shine the light in the darkness. I would edit the survivor’s statement to say, “So we all have talk.”

We need to confess & confront & deconstruct & dismantle this dangerous hierarchical patriarchal power amongst us.

I watched the first episode when you first posted, episode 2 with my wife, and the third yesterday. I don't think I can stomach any more, unless you can tell me the last episode shows these men held to account for their evil deeds. Spoiler please!

It was powerful to watch a historical event take place and then hear how it’s already impacting peoples’ lives. Everyone seemed relieved that your trust in the filmmakers was rewarded with truth telling, empathy and the empowerment of survivors. Thankfully your joint efforts are helping to build a new community where truth, integrity, honor and respect are more powerful than manipulation, deception and the rampant abuse of power. Thank you for making yourself available for this important project. Your daughter must be very proud of her mom (and on her way to thinking about how she can help make the world a better place in her own way)!
