I hope it says around. Still you've surely turned your five twitter talents into ten. Grateful for your example of goodness and leadership on hard to discuss topics.

I just love you. And I love Twitter. It’s been a really special place for me for all of those reasons you said. I really don’t want it to go away. Also, thanks for tweeting about my book that one time. 🥰 It meant a lot to me. I think you’re pretty amazing and hope to meet you IRL someday. 💗

Twitter's potential demise might be conceptualized as things going dark, but, on the flip side, its demise might be evidence for our need for better light. Twitter set the stage for the drama of humanity's capacity for deception, which is how a wealthy media star with those abilities could so easily cast himself in a major role. Maybe, as a reaction, some social media genius could develop a platform to test our capacity for generosity and lovingkindness.

I joined Twitter when I found out on YouTube that thoughtful people like you hang out there. It’s been only recent for me (1 year) and I can’t believe how much I missed all these years. I hope Twitter is rescued or a similar platform emerges where a similar range of users can share the same space. Twitter demystified journalists & politicians for me. I realised the value of historians, economists, academics & every day people who actively pursue justice because of their lived experience. Will try to follow them in other spaces but I wish this will not be necessary.

I totally get it. I’ll be following on sub stack because we need your voice. Thank you for your work.

I enjoy reading your tweets and your replies to others on that platform. Like you, I'm staying for now, but I realize I may have to leave the music and grab a life jacket.

Here's a life preserver: https://joinmastodon.org/

Please do consider moving over to the fediverse on mastodon - at least setup an account there just in case twitter sinks. It's so much calmer there. No algorithms boosting outrage. Before about 2 weeks ago it was kind of sparse over there as far as who to follow... but now that's changing rapidly as many twitter refugees are showing up. For example L. M. Sacasas of The Convivial Society just popped up over there. It's amazing what Musk has done for Mastodon, it probably would've remained small and relatively insular without his nudging twitter over the cliff. I'm now following many people I used to follow on twitter.

Mastodon is a federated service like email - there is no central control. There are many different servers you can choose from (just like how you can choose from many different email providers and they all just work together). You can choose to move your account to a different server later if you like. Being decentralized makes it difficult for someone like... oh, a billionaire... from taking it over and ruining it.

How do you decide which server? Just go where your friends go?

Yes, this is the part of mastodon that can be a bit confusing. They suggest you choose a server based on your interests. I think right now I'd suggest going with the general interest server mastodon.online. Searching servers I didn't see one that was aimed at historians. However there are a few for journalists and historians are journalists, right? Take a look at: https://onemanandhisblog.com/2022/11/mastodon-servers-for-journalists/

Edit: there are advantages to being on a smaller server like the two journalist-oriented servers listed in that article. Some of the general interest servers are becoming overloaded as a lot of people jump over to them from twitter. The smaller ones are less noticed but still connect to all of the others. The smaller ones like the two journalist-servers (Journa.host and newsie.social) are also more selective so you'll have to get approval to join - this can be a good thing. Personally I'm on fosstodon.org which is oriented towards techies (@philtor@fosstodon.org)

Thank you for being here. I've learned so much these last few years from so many of whom you are one. I'll stick around on Twitter as long as you and some others do.
