I'm on page 141 and fought back tears reading about Marabel Morgan (my mom had The Total Woman on her bookshelf when I was a kid) and The Act of Marriage (she had that one hidden but I found it and read it) and the women in unhappy marriages who bent over backward to please their shitty husbands (me). Just like these women, I went on to write books telling other women to do the same thing and I will keep saying this over and over: I'm so glad I never got famous enough to make it into your book. I've never been happier about mediocre book sales in my life. Your book is a freaking gift.

As the happiest sad person on earth who also happens to be ambitiously lazy, I will admit that I did not preorder. As a person who is also usually a day late and a dollar short, I will be asking my library to order a copy which is where I access all new books. In the mean time, I thank God profusely that I grew up in a family and church that put emphasis on gifting others with our time, talents and treasures rather than limiting our abilities and service by gender. As a young woman in the eighties and nineties I thank God I found essays and poetry and fiction and memoir by Margaret Atwood and Madeline L’Engle and AS Byatt and Sue Monk Kidd and too many others to name to keep me intellectually and spiritually challenged and centered on what matters. I am looking forward to adding your book to my reading list for some more of that “fancy” writing. Thank you.

Jesus and John Wayne woke me up to a lot of things I was not understanding about the false gospels promulgated by “authors and preachers” that Oswald Chambers tried to warn about back so long ago. Around the time the “Scofield“ Bible was published.

I'm curious...have you ever come across a (ghastly) women's magazine called Above Rubies' which was aimed at Christian women here in New Zealand? It preached the sort of nonsense you are exposing and grappling with. And I confess I used to read it and tried, unsuccessfully, to be that kind of woman. I have way more sense now but was a bit of a slow learner.
