I wanted you all to be the first to know…I made a movie!
That’s right, the documentary For Our Daughters, based on the final chapter of Jesus and John Wayne, releases September 26.
Here’s your first glimpse:
From start to finish, this has been a labor of love.
When I say “I made a movie,” what I really mean is that Carl Byker, an Emmy award-winning director, created the film, and I had a hand in things along the way.
We’re thrilled with how it turned out.
We are especially thrilled to platform the voices of several remarkable women: Christa Brown, Jules Woodson, Cait West, Tiffany Thigpen, and Rachael Denhollander.
In the film, courageous survivors share their stories of abuse in evangelical spaces and warn what it will mean for American women if we place the country into the hands of men like these. There are dark moments in the film, but in the end, this is a story of hope—of women speaking truth to power and calling on other women to do the same.
Also, my own pastor makes an appearance.
Starting September 26, the film will stream free on YouTube, on our website.
So many people poured their hearts and souls into this film to make this happen. In addition to Carl, who put an incredible amount of unremunerated labor into this film, and the invaluable contributions of the film’s participants, my thanks go out to our executive producers Ken Harbaugh and Charlie Sadoff and our amazing publicity team: Kris Fuhr, Mary Collins, Tiffany Long, Laura McClendon, Robin Barnett, Ciera McElroy, Sarah Kate Bennett, and Ryan Dunlap.
But now, we need your help.
What can you do?
We would love for you to help amplify these women’s voices and spread the message of this film by sharing the trailer on your social media platforms. When the film releases, you can also invite friends or church groups to watch the film together. It’s a documentary short, so it comes in right around 30 minutes—perfectly timed to view and discuss the film together.
For those of you in West Michigan, Still Processing will be hosting a local screening in Holland on Oct. 3. Carl Byker and I will both be there, as will some of the participants. We’ll be at the Knickerbocker Theater at 86th E 8th St at 7pm. The event is co-sponsored by Hope’s Women and Gender Studies and Psychology Departments.
I’ll also be doing a couple of online screenings with discussions so stay tuned for those, and I’ll be doing a couple in-person screenings around the country as well. (For larger organizations with capacity to host a public in-person screening and discussion, these can be booked through my speaking agent here.) But we’ve made the film free and accessible so that it can have the widest reach possible, so think about creative ways to organize viewings and invite others to view the film.
I’ll share more details in the run-up to the film’s release, but I wanted you all to be the first to know.
Thankful to have been a small part. Extremely grateful that this message of damaging religious power dynamics that have twisted our faith, weaponized our religious world and bred a culture of fear and destruction. We have paid a high cost and so has our country.
I hope people will see and not take this lightly, wake up and change the power imbalances that destroy us all.
Thank you Carl Byker, Kristin DuMez and all who made this possible. Honored to work alongside you.
Powerful preview! Thanks for your relentless pursuit of the truth.
