I highly recommend John Gorka's calm, guitar-backed acoustic arrangement of "I Heard the Bells." It seems to capture something that the choral arrangements, for as much as I love them, miss.
I did not know until I read this week that the military governments of Argentina and Guatemala, like the British colonial government in India, banned the public singing or reading of Mary’s song, the Magnificat.
Lyrics have power!
Our church choir used to sing “The Canticle of the Turning.” I’ve always liked it.
Tonight I will renew a Christmas Eve tradition of listening to the Chieftans’ Bells of Dublin, which includes one of my favorites, Jackson Browne’s The Rebel Jesus.
Two beautiful carols, I have long lived them both. You are so right that they truly speak to this year. This Advent I am hearing to loudly proclaimed through tge prophets, and Mary, and sung through the words and music of the carols God's call to truth, justice, and peace.
May the peace of God Incarnate be with you and your kin this Christma
Ouch! The burn is real… I always loved “Come thou long expected Jesus”, so much that I listen to it all year round! The time I visited CoS last year they sang it.
Thanks you for your leadership this past year. Hope your fam has a lovely holiday time. ☺️
What an amazing, wonderful season!!!!Thank you God!!!!! For although we live in ugly, ugly times, uncertainty is all around, still we have great, great hope in the One who came to . .. "turn the world . . ."
They are favorites of mine too and ones which are, I lament, not sung enough. I did not know the background behind Longfellow’s words. Thank you for sharing, Kristin. May you and your family feel this Christmas the presence of God, the hope and joyous expectation expressed in these carols.
I love Canticle of the Turning.

The Cantcle of the Turning always brings tears to my eyes. It is so very hopeful. Mary's song.
Thanks for a lovely Christmas gift of narrative, song and prayer, Kristin. ❤️🎄

Merry Christmas from Phrigid Phoenix, Kristin. That captured the sentiment perfectly.
